Facts about the coffee trade:
  • Coffee is the world’s second most traded commodity, second to oil.
  • The price paid to coffee farmers is now at a 30 year low, but the price we pay is at an all time high.
  • Still today, Fair Trade farmers sell only about 20% of their coffee at a Fair Trade price.
  • Countries like Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua are nearly 100% reliant on coffee export revenue. 
  • 14 years after the genocide in Rwanda, coffee is seen as the key to economic recovery.
  • The price of coffee is set in New York on the commodity markets without much of a thought of the farmers.
